Big goals: Silverdale's Maddy Lewis is the Australian champion for freestyle junior ladies and she will compete in the world championships in November.

Maddy Lewis knows the Penrith Whitewater Stadium like the back of her hand.

The 17-year-old from Silverdale trains there twice a week and will only intensify her efforts after recently qualifying for the canoe world championships in November.

She will represent Australian in the freestyle competition, where the paddler performs technical moves in one place.

But the Elderslie High School needs the community’s help to get there, having to raise $6000 to pay for accommodation and transport costs.

Five years ago, Lewis went to a ‘come and try’ day where she met Olympic silver medalist Jessica Fox and she loved the sport.

“My goal in slalom is to compete at the world championships and at the Olympics,” Lewis said.

“I hope to place at the freestyle world championships in November [in November].”
