Jessica Fox returns to Blaxland HIgh

OLYMPIC kayak silver medal-winner Jessica Fox got a rock star’s welcome at her old school, Blaxland High today.

Students’ cheers echoed off the walls of the school’s sports centre, while Jessica signed autographs and passed her silver medal around for others to touch.

Last year, Jessica completed her HSC at Blaxland High, coming first in the state in physical education.

‘‘It’s so special; I love this school,’’ Jessica said. ‘‘I have great memories here; I had great teachers who gave me their support and that’s why I did so well.’’

Year 12 students Chelsea, Rhiannon, Keturah and Hannah said their former school mate was an inspiration to them all.

‘‘I saw Jessica before she went to the Olympics,’’ Chelsea said. ‘‘She told me she was excited, but she was so calm; she was awesome.’’

Rhiannon said her best moment was seeing Jessica win her medal.

‘‘I got teary, it was nice to see that,’’ she said. ‘‘She’s very inspiring.’’

Keturah said: ‘‘I was jumping up and down for her.

‘‘It was so exciting; knowing someone who won a medal in the Olympics.’’

Hannah said: ‘‘She’s about the same age as us; it makes us want to do something too.’’

Jessica said the moment she won her silver was ‘‘awesome, I was so excited’’.

‘‘It was a great feeling; all the hard work that I’d put into it had achieved this.

‘‘I want to say to others at Blaxland High that they should take the opportunities to do as much sport as they can, because I was able to train and I studied well too.’’

Students, and some of their parents, kept queuing to get their photos taken with Jessica, until a teacher had to finally plead with them all to go back to class.
