A "Watch and Act" alert level has been issued for a 980 hectare fire burning in the area around Castlereagh and Londonderry.
Same goes for the grass fire in Grange Avenue, Marsden Park, a Rural Fire Service told Fairfax Media at 6.45pm.
More than 200 firefighters are continuing to work to contain the fire, particularly at Cranebrook Road, Castlereagh.
There is no direct threat to property at this stage.
"The bush fire is burning in an easterly direction and earlier this afternoon burnt through Devlin and Nutt Roads in the Londonderry area," the website stated at 6.02pm.
But residents remain worried South Windsor will burn if the wind changes.
‘‘There’s smoke at the back of the house but it’s all right so far here; my only big concern is the wind doesn’t blow back onto South Windsor,’’ a resident of George Street in South Windsor said about 4pm.
‘‘They’re forecasting a [wind] change between five and six, so I’ll see which way it changes and then I’ll probably get out with a hose.”
A fire is currently burning on both sides of George Street, but his part of the road remains open to traffic.
‘‘Rifle Range Road is blocked off and they’re [police] directing residents out of the area and into the safety zones which, I think, are Bligh Park Tavern and Windsor RSL,” he said.
Both sides of Richmond Road in South Windsor are also burning under strong northerly winds.
The fire has already crossed Richmond Road and is burning in the Windsor Downs Nature Reserve.
More than 95 fire fighters were working to contain the fire and protect properties in the area as of 4.05pm.
The Rural Fire Service command centre was moved to nearby Riverstone earlier today as fires continue to rage across the area.
“Fires are burning quite fiercely,” a police spokeswoman said at 3.15pm.
“There’s basically no access on the western side of Railway Terrace,” she said, adding that Norwest Christian College in Riverstone, as well as Marsden Park Public School, had been evacuated.
About 3.30pm a parent said Bede Polding College in South Windsor was "in lockdown and all parents have been called to collect their children".
Hawkesbury police confirmed about 2.30pm that homes in Bligh Park had been evacuated due to a fire raging in the area.
"It's mayhem,'' Bligh Park resident Linda Bates said.
She said the area was evacuated by police at about 1.15pm.
Mrs Bates drove to two local schools to pick up her children, and friends' children.
''There's thick black smoke... and parents and cars everywhere,'' she said.
The police spokeswoman said at 2.33pm that affected streets included Thorley Street and Rich Close.
But the Rural Fire Service (RFS) said they could not confirm this.
An RFS spokeswoman said residents should not travel to Penrith Whitewater Stadium.
St Paul's Grammar School has “self-relocated” to the stadium, she said.
“We are certainly by no means encouraging people to go there,” she stressed.
Twelve RFS crews have been called to Castlereagh and Londonderry to assist.
Fire had burnt through 60 hectares of “predominantly grass land”, the RFS spokeswoman said at 2.30pm.
