In the big league

THEY'VE made it. The Penrith men are into the Waratah Championship League basketball finals.

They grabbed fourth spot with a 96-72 over the Parramatta Wildcats at home on Sunday.

The Panthers will now host the Central Coast Crusaders in an elimination quarter-final at Penrith Valley Regional Sports Centre this Sunday.

The Panthers had the Wildcats game sewn up when they raced out to a 28-13 lead in the first quarter, thanks to the hot hand of American import Ben Ellsworth.

Ben Kearins and Sean Albert both moved into double figures in the second term, and Sydney Kings development player Louis Brandt also moved into double figures with a quarter left to play.

The Penrith women made it a double in their debut season by beating the Wildcats 55-49.

Meanwhile, Penrith's Ella Tofaeono and Tahlia Tupaea have been chosen for an Australia under-17 selection camp in Canberra from August 29 to September 1.

Penrith under 14 men won a silver medal at the junior state championships.
